I am writing to you from land originally lived on and cared for by the Chumash Tribe! I like to reflect on respecting and protecting indigenous cultures and histories. To learn more about the Native peoples who originally lived on and cared for the land where you reside, you can search for your address on this awesome interactive map from the Native Land Digital organization. “I honor with gratitude the lands and waters of Texas, home to Indigenous peoples since time immemorial—including the Apache, Caddo, Comanche, Coahuiltecan, and many others whose stewardship and resilience continue today. My relationship to this place is rooted in gratitude, and I commit to deepening that through action: by sharing Indigenous stories, amplifying voices, and caring for these lands as a humble and remote guest. I recognize that acknowledgment is not just words, but a call to ongoing learning and reciprocity.” I want to also acknowledge the native folks from Texas and honor them by listing some of their tribes here as I hope to be working with the descendants in their Native locations:
Gaining this knowledge helps us better understand and appreciate the deep history and culture of the land we now call home. The Native Land map is an educational resource that aims to spark curiosity, dialog, and connections between Indigenous communities and the lands we all share. Searching the map is a small step we can take to honor Native peoples and communities on Indigenous Peoples’ Day and beyond.
